Every once in a while, Amazon.com has a crazy deal on Leophoto LH-40 ball heads. For anyone not familiar with Leofoto products, they make excellent knock-offs (with some improvements) of high-end photographic stand/support equipment such as carbon fibre tripods, ball heads, mono-pods and assorted other photo accessories. By all reports the LH-40 is a Right Stuff BH-40 with over 95% of the functionality but at a fraction of the price.

The LH-40 already retails on Amazon.com for a very reasonable price of $161.10 US which is a good bit lower than any other retailer in the US – LeofotoUSA has it for $245US, B&H $179US, thecamerastore $236.87 CDN. Currently, Amazon.com has lowered its price to $135 US AND it added on a 20% coupon to further reduce the price to $101.25US which is a bargain. If you decide to add almost any product carried by the distributor (they have been selling Leofoto in the US for years) including another Leofoto product with a coupon, they stack another 10% discount which brings the price down to $87.75 US.

Normally, shipping from the US to Canada will kill the deal but via Amazon.com, the shipping is reasonable. I ordered a Leofoto monogimbal (which had a 25% off coupon) to take advantage of the stacking 10% discount and the shipping and import charges totalled $23.18 US. One might say that $23.18 US for shipping and import charges is nuts and kills the deal but if you consider that Washington State charges sales tax on Amazon.com purchases and my postal drop in the US charges per package, I’m only paying another $5 to have it shipped to Canada and I probably bypass any GST as it’s being collected by Amazon via import charges.

The total amount for the monogimbal and ball head was $304.00 US before shipping, and discounts. Discounts totalled $106.40 US with shipping costing $13.14 for a total before tax of $210.74. Import Fees were $10.04 for a grand total of $220.78.
