There are a few reasons why this is a good price: 1) DeWalt titanium bits review well, 2) there are more sizes than normal in this little case, so you’re less likely to be annoyed needing another size, 3) DeWalt cases have the best bit holders, 4) DeWalt case parts are cross-compatible, 5) there are worse non-titanium (“black oxide”, “black and gold”) sets for the same price or more, 6) this set is $35 USD in the states right now, so obviously $40 CAD is a good price.

The price of this set has been a few dollars lower a few times, but not for long. Right now Kent.ca has this for $60, Canadian Tire has it for $67, Rona has it for $70, and Home Depot doesn’t have it. Normal price at american stores is $35 USD, $25 USD on sale. Home Depot USA doesn’t have it in stock, but Lowes USA does.

There is also a pilot/brad-like tip version (which I think is better for normal people) that trades prices randomly, and right now it’s $50.

My favorite part of these sets is actually the case and bit holder. The holder uniquely supports a ton of different bit sizes, with visible labels, that are easy to get out without destroying your fingers, and the holders can be transferred into other dewalt cases. You can refill these holders with other standard drill bits of that size. You can plug these holders into one of these kingly two-layer sets that don’t come with titanium bits:

https://www.rona.ca/en/product/craftsman-drive-and-drill-bit-set-60-pieces-shock-resistant-steel-hard-protective-case-cmaf1260-00276599 (Craftsman and DeWalt are the same company)
(Other stores have similar versions of those sets for 2x the price, by the way)

The reason I care so much about the case is because one of the great scams in the tool world is to never sell a perfect set of anything in order to keep you annoyed and buying new stuff. But DeWalt screwed up and made all their cases cross-compatible, so you can mix-and-match parts to build your own perfect case of stuff.

FAQ:
– Common “twist” drill bits like these are for drilling in many different materials.
– Brad-point (and to a lesser extent DeWalt’s “pilot point”) bits have a tiny drill bit on the end to make precise drilling into wood easier, preventing the bit from moving around on the surface before drilling (which is why people sometimes need to drill a smaller pilot hole first).
– Cheaper spade drill bits are for drilling big holes in wood.
– Titanium coating makes drill bits more durable, especially when drilling through metal.
– Cheaper black oxide coating just prevents rust.
– More expensive cobalt drill bits are harder steel and are meant for heavy duty metal work.
