Fluance , a good Canadian company that sells nice quality speakers that punch above their inexpensive prices, still has their Cyber Monday 20% off deals active. That includes deals on some of their powered bookshelf speakers (as well as their unpowered standing, bookshelf and surround speakers, vinyl turntables, etc).
For instance, take their well reviewed Ai61 Powered 6.5″ Stereo Bookshelf Speakers or the smaller cousin, the Ai41 Powered 5″ version. These are nice powered bookshelfs that might find a role as your surround back, height channels, etc (and maybe even fronts or standalone bluetooth speakers). These are Bluetooth 5 enabled so you can stream directly to them from your phone, et al.
With recent Black Friday Denon and Onkyo codes and sales that so many took advantage of here, something like the X3800H (and X4800H, when it’s released) or the Onkyo RZ50, etc provide 9ch amplifier support out of box, but have 11ch pre-outs and internal processing. So, with a few extra speakers and an external 2ch amp, you can step up to 7.4.4 processing for Atmos and DTS:X, for example, or 5.4.6 processing for Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D upmixing, etc (don’t sleep on this as Auro-3D upmixing is pretty great).
These powered speakers would negate the need for a separate, expensive 2ch external amplifier and have all the rear inputs you’d need to take advantage of your receiver’s pre-outs (and thus, the move from 9.4ch to 11.4ch processing for example).
